Earthen berms are a good secondary containment solution for sites with large footprints, such as oil storage depots, as long as the soil is impervious. To comply with SPCC regulations and prevent hydrocarbon contamination, C.I.Agent® Oil Filtration Panels can be installed in sections of the surrounding berm, and covered with clean, washed stone to provide passive, self-activating oil containment. Rain and waste water can flow freely from the site, but if a large oil release occurs, the C.I.Agent® polymers in the Oil Filtration Panels will solidify on contact and stop the flow of hydrocarbons. This containment solution can usually be installed within a day and is covered by a Product Liability and Pollution Insurance Policy of up to $7 million*.

The C.I.Agent® Geomembrane Liner, in conjunction with ADS Pipe and VIPOR System, is a passive secondary containment solution ideal for situations requiring a smaller footprint or where space constraints are present. The volume of oil capacity is increased exponentially through the storage capacity of the perforated ADS pipes, thus requiring fewer materials (liner, pipes, etc.) and creating a smaller footprint. Water is evacuated through a solid line from the containment area into a sump containing the VIPOR system. This automatic sump pump system utilizes proven C.I.Agent® technology to prevent the discharge of any hydrocarbons into the environment. Fiberglass composite walls, such as Strongwell® COMPOSOLITE® Walls, are an adequate secondary containment solution when aesthetics are important to the end-user. However, it’s important to remember that an effective system must contain walls, a floor and a method to evacuate waste water to prevent water from pooling within the containment area. When using aesthetically-pleasing Strongwell® composite walls in sandy or undetermined soils, it is recommended to install a C.I.Agent® Geomembrane along the walls and the floor of the containment area, with a drain in the floor leading to a C.I.Agent® HFF Oil Stop Valve housed within a vault outside the containment area. Fiberglass composite walls, such as Strongwell® COMPOSOLITE Walls, provide an aesthetically pleasing and efficient above-grade secondary containment solution, as long as there is a method to effectively contain and evacuate waste and rainwater. In case of a high water table, an automated system is recommended to ensure there is no backup. When used in conjunction with the COMPOSOLITE walls, the C.I.Agent® Geomembrane Liner with VIPOR System is an ideal passive secondary oil containment solution for non-permeable subsoils that do not provide adequate drainage of stormwater.

Water can be evacuated from the containment area by flowing into a sump, either inside or outside of the containment area, that houses a VIPOR system, an automatic sump pump that utilizes proven C.I.Agent® technology to prevent the discharge of any hydrocarbons into the environment. The VIPOR also includes the C.I.Agent® VSF System to offer redundant oil protection. For additional redundancy protection against hundred-year rainfall events, an additional VIPOR system may be recommended.
