There is an estimated 5 million utility vaults and manholes in the United States – approximately 4 manholes to every one vault – and all of them have challenges such as wastewater removal, sludge dewatering, and industrial wastewater management, among other things. Inspection schedules vary by need, regional location and manpower.
Wastewater trapped in these underground structures may have traces of oil, lubricant, or other hydrocarbons, as well as organic matter, mud, silt, or other pollutants coming from the surface. The water accumulates in these substructures and is usually discharged by some sort of submersible pump system. What wastewater pump systems can’t handle is the debris, sediment and light oils also in the structure.
EVAC Filtration System
The C.I.Agent EVAC Filtration System and line of products is ideal for dewatering contaminated wastewater from underground utility vaults, manholes, retention and secondary containment vessels, out-fall on oil-water separators and elevator shafts.
C.I.Agent EVAC Filtration System
It utilizes a 4-layer state-of-the-art filtration and dewatering technology to absorb hydrocarbons, remove large and fine sediment, and polish the water. The integrated use of the oil-solidifying C.I.Agent Polymers micro encapsulates oil in order to give the EVAC Filter the highest available hydrocarbon capacity in the industry. It also eliminates the need for vacuum trucks and expensive water processing.
Its superior engineering allows the EVAC Filter to endure not only high flows but also higher pressures. A Hydrocarbon Detection Strip indicates when the filter is nearing maximum hydrocarbon retention level. Other dewatering filtration options include EVAC Lite, EVAC Lite Plus, EVAC Lite with Agent-Q, the Carbon Filter and the Vinyl Filter Casing with EVAC.
Hydrocarbon Detection Strips
The C.I.Agent® Hydrocarbon Detection Strips can quickly and accurately determine the presence of any type of oil in water. When introduced into a potential hydrocarbon situation, the light blue color of the strip changes to a darker blue if hydrocarbons are detected.

The size and color intensity of the darker areas indicate the quantity of oil detected. If no oil present, the strip will not moisten or discolor.
Hydrocarbon Detection Strips can be used in any situation where there is a need to detect oil contamination in water, including in elevator shafts, underground utility vaults and manholes, retention and secondary containment vessels, and out-fall on oil-water separators prior to pumping out water.
Vault Sump Filters
The C.I.Agent VSF Vault Sump Filters complement any pump system by preventing debris, silt, and oil from reaching the pump, thus avoiding malfunction and stoppage.
C.I.Agent VSF Vault Sump Filters
The dewatering VSFs are available in round configuration and in segmented panels for flexibility to fit in any area. Complete VSF Systems include the Filter Housing, the VSF Pre-Filter (Debris and Silt Filter), and the Agent-Q Oil and Sheen Filter. Components can be ordered together as a system or separately, depending on your needs. VSF Add-Ons include an installation kit and a rubber seal.
The C.I.Agent Vault Integrated Pump and Oil Redundancy (VIPOR) System is an automatic vault / manhole sump pump that can be run with the confidence that sludge, sediment, and oil will not be discharged.
C.I.Agent VIPOR System
The VIPOR System’s main core provides complete shutoff in the event of a significant hydrocarbon release. This is made possible by the use of C.I.Agent Solidifying Polymers that capture, contain and solidify harmful hydrocarbons.
The wastewater screening equipment involved is a pre-filter that covers the core for added protection against sediment, debris and nuisance hydrocarbons, allowing for consistent, automatic flow of wastewater. The vault / manhole sump pump used in the VIPOR System is a ½ HP. All VIPOR Systems include a VSF and a nylon Silt and Sediment Sack for the outflow pipe.

C.I.Agent Agent-Q (US Patent 8,986,822) is a non-woven composite fabric structure embedded with C.I.Agent Polymers for oil spill solidification.
C.I.Agent® Agent-Q (US Patent 8,986,822)
It is a key component of many of our secondary containment, vault and manhole maintenance and water filtration solutions. The Agent-Q fabric is quilted in diamond pattern to encapsulate and solidify hydrocarbons on contact without absorbing wastewater.
One layer of Agent-Q flows 400 gallons/minute/m2. It has an average grab strength of a nominal 60 pounds (ASTM D5034 testing) and a burst strength of a nominal 70 psi (ASTM D3786 testing). It is effective in temperatures ranging from -30°F to +130°F.
C.I.Agent Scupper Filters are used in scupper drains on marine vessels to prevent oil contaminated wastewater (deck runoff) from entering the waters of the U.S. pursuant to Federal Statutes 33CFR Parts 155-157, CWA Section 311, and 40CFR 110.3.
C.I.Agent Scupper Filters
The Scupper Filters use C.I.Agent® Solidifying Polymers as the oil dewatering filter media. C.I.Agent® Solidifying Polymers are encased between two filter bag layers, which allows wastewater to flow freely from the decks but prevents hydrocarbons from escaping.
The C.I.Agent® Scupper filters ensure a compliant discharge of deck wastewater. They are designed to fit below the scupper plug as a secondary line of defense.
